Robbie Kitt

Robbie Kitt is a musician from Dublin. He has been making music since his teenage years playing in bands and learning the ins and outs of audio production. He began studying Music and Media Technologies intending on advancing those skills, previously only honed in a DIY environment.

Having graduated from an undergraduate degree in philosophy and politics, he holds a keen interest in the philosophical side of music. Deeply intrigued by questions such as what defines the meaning of music for us and why is it so important in our lives, he has been frustrated by the analytic, reductive approaches and object-orientated methods by which music has been sought to be understood. He seeks to gain insight into musical understanding beyond this current model by deeply analysing the subjective point of view. Music is an exceptionally expressive and powerful communicative tool but it is not declarative, like language. Meaning in music is deeply intertwined with the individual's perceptions. As such, his thesis work is a composition project where he has worked intimately with individuals to analyse their musical preferences and their relationship with music. This research is then used as a compositional framework to create pieces of music that will be particularly profound for the subjects they were intended for. This, Robbie hopes, will create a system of composition that will take the composer's ego out of the process but also highlight the importance of subjective analysis when it comes to deeply understanding music, and perceptual experiences in general.
